THE NATURE OF CHANGE – AND WHY WE RESIST EVEN THE BEST IDEAS
By Barry Lake, CEO at Devana Solutions LLC

I am pretty sure that no-one disputes that saving for retirement is a good idea and we all mean to do something about it pretty soon.
Yet, according to numbers from the Economic Policy Institute (http://www.epi.org/publication/retirement-in-america), the typical American couple has saved $5k.
A famous article in the New Yorker from 2013 examined the concept of ‘slow ideas’ (http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/07/29/slow-ideas) and among several wonderful examples reported that after the initial breakthrough at a hospital in Boston, the use of anesthesia on patients undergoing surgery was slow to be adopted and considered a ‘needless luxury’ by many.
At the time, infection killed up to half the people who underwent major surgery.
The team at Devana Solutions is very passionate about the change we are bringing to the clinical trials industry.
It is an industry ripe for constructive disruption. The adoption of new technologies such as the Devana Solutions Ignite for Sites and, in future, a “Devana Score” based on site’s performance metrics will bring improve trial feasibility, site selection and trial performance, reducing clinical trial cycle time, eventually leading to lower drug prices. There is a win for everyone in adopting change and new ideas.
But it is instructive for all of us involved to remember how change is a difficult process and is not always embraced initially even for those who would benefit from it the most.
The Huffington Post published an entertaining blog on the subject a couple of years ago (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andre-bourque/those-slow-to-adopt-new-t_b_6434126.html) which recalled Stephanie Overby’s observation in CIO magazine:
“When the first wheel was rolled out in 3000 BC, just a handful of Mesopotamians had enough insight and risk tolerance to give it a whirl while others looked on from a safe distance”.
What does all this mean for those of us trying to bring what we believe is overdue new ideas and change to clinical trial sites in the US?
It means that while we continue to explain and communicate what it is about Devana’s technology that brings new solutions and addresses old problems, we also have to understand what it is that motivates people and organizations to change – and what causes them to resist even innovations that appear to be slam dunks.
Reading around the psychology of change makes me believe that you have to find ways to appeal to people’s best interests – over and beyond the factual information about the technology and its benefits.
Barriers include fear of failure, organizational politics, a lack of mutual trust and simply poor timing.
Using advanced technology to reduce clinical trial cycle time and lower drug prices should appeal to everyone; so, despite resistance, rest assured the Devana Solutions’ passionate quest to bring about positive and long lasting change to clinical trial sites and the industry will continue.
